An Overview of Mental Health in Jurupa Valley California

With a rich history dating back hundreds of years, Jurupa Valley is a mix of high and low density residential housing, citrus farming and other agricultural concerns as well as commercial and retail industries. The city itself was recently incorporated in 2011 and includes the communities of Belltown, Crestmore Heights, Glen Avon, Indian Hills, Mira Loma, Rubidoux and Sunnyslope.

By the late 1800’s Jurupa Valley was already starting to live in the shadow of its neighbor to the south, Riverside, California. Cited by city planners as place with much room for growth Jurupa Valley is still relatively small at just 44 square miles with a population of just over 100,000 people. Though, like much of California the city is experiencing growth of another kind – people with mental health needs.

Mental Health Statistics and Concerns for Jurupa Valley, California

1 in 6 Californians suffer from some form of mental illness and 1 in 20 suffer from a serious mental illness. For the youth, that rate is even higher with 1 in 13 suffering from a mental health illness that limits daily activity. Unfortunately, these statewide statistics hold true even for a smaller community like Jurupa Valley.

According to a recent report, roughly half of adults and two-thirds of minors with mental health needs do not get treatment. Serious mental illness was found to be more prevalent in those with lower incomes. The supply of acute care psychiatric beds has been on the decline for over 15 years.

Also like many other places in the nation, Riverside County has seen its share of suicides. An estimated 10.5 suicides per 100,000 has completed suicide at a cost to the communities in the county to over $1B, not counting the human cost.
