An Overview of Mental Health in Newport Beach, California

Newport Beach, California, is home to some of the most beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and a haven for fishing, boating, bodysurfing and paddle boarding. Newport Beach is located in Orange County, which is one of the state’s largest counties and one of several coastline beaches that run along the Pacific in Southern California. The city’s population is 86,813 and currently in decline.

Despite its sunny skies and glorious ocean views, some of Newport Beach’s populace suffers from a variety of mental issues that include bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. The problem seems to be growing while treatment centers and medical professionals struggle to keep up. If you live in the area and want to seek mental health treatment, it is important to first understand which factors and triggers are unique to the social, economical and environmental aspects of Newport Beach and that may affect you and others who are suffering from these problems.

Mental Health Factors in Newport Beach, California

Incidents of mental health disorders in Orange County are rising. Many children under the age of 18 are being effected and others who need treatment are likely not getting the help they need. There are several factors that may be contributing to this problem that are unique to the Newport Beach area and include:

  • Homelessness: untreated mental illness and suicide were two major factors in the deaths of 81 homeless people in Newport Beach in 2016.
  • Income: 6 percent of residents live below the poverty line and do not have access to medical insurance or proper health care.
  • Military Service Trauma: 47 percent of veterans living in Newport Beach served in Vietnam and many suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.

To add to these factors, some Californians who have health care insurance may not be covered for mental health conditions. This can lead to a worsening of symptoms and even suicidal actions, which can have a negative long-term effect on the families of those impacted by suicide.

The Challenges of Finding a Therapist in Newport Beach, California

While a lack of insurance is likely one of the main challenges for Newport Beach residents when it comes to getting treatment for their mental health issues, there are other factors that may prevent them from connecting with a therapist as well. One is the growing number of seniors in the area, which is the only local populace that is increasing.  Some might have physical limitations that make it difficult to leave their homes, while others do not drive and have trouble accessing public transportation.

The challenges of finding mental health treatment in Newport Beach include the stigma of these issues themselves. While one out of six Californians has an untreated mental condition, the rest of the country fares no better, with almost half of Americans suffering in silence. Many do not seek treatment because they feel ashamed or guilty about their affliction, while others may not be aware there is help available in their area, including in and around Newport Beach.

Mental Health Resources in Newport Beach, California

Mental health treatment in Newport Beach is available for children, adolescents and adults. From clinics to hospitals to private practices, there are quite a few selections that include:

  • The Weichman Clinic: This is a facility that specializes in treating children and adolescents. Both neurological and psychiatric evaluations are available. The Weichman Clinic is located in Newport Beach, which may make it easier for residents to reach it without needed public transportation.
  • ASPIRE at Hoag Newport Beach: Adolescents who are experiencing grief, PTSD, anxiety or depression may find help at this clinic affiliated with the nearby Hoag Hospital. ASPIRE accepts many different types of insurance plans and can offer teenage patients after-school programs that help them focus on wellness instead of their specific mental health care concern.
  • Coastal Behavioral Health: A mental and behavioral treatment center that services teens and adults alike. This facility specializes in treating addiction, eating disorders, depression and anxiety. Individual and family therapy are both available, along with crisis intervention for patients who are in immediate danger due to addictive or suicidal behaviors.
