The city is given a B- on crime and safety, but crime statistics are much lower in the city than in the rest of the country. The most populous age group in the city is over 55 years old.

Tourists visit the area for parks, libraries, recreation trails, and close access to the city of Los Angeles. Diamond Bar is a small suburb of a much larger city, nestled far enough away from the chaos in Los Angeles that residents enjoy a quiet, upscale lifestyle with the convenience and excitement of one of the country’s busiest cities just minutes away.

The city’s racial makeup is slightly different than most cities in California. The majority of the population is Asian, followed closely by Hispanic, then white, then black, the two or more races. Regarding residents over 15 years old, 6.7 percent have been divorced, 33 percent have never married, and just over 54 percent are currently married. Many of the residents come from places outside the country such as Latin America and Asia.

For every 100,000 residents of Diamond Bar, there are 272 mental health professionals to help with mental health treatment. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 18.5 percent of adults, 43.8 million or one in five, will experience mental illness each year. Substance abuse disorders are common along with posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression.

Mental illness contributes significantly to the homeless problem plaguing the country as 26 percent of homeless adults who live in shelters have some type of mental illness. This also affects the jail population with 20 percent of state prisoners dealing with a mental health condition.

Mental Health Resources in Diamond Bar, California

Diamond Bar is home to several counseling and mental health centers for individuals who are seeking help. Some of these include Lighthouse Treatment Center, Crossroads Recovery Centers, Newport Academy, and a long list of qualified, certified private therapists to help those dealing with mental illness.

When a mental illness is left untreated, the problem may get worse over time. Those with these conditions may develop long-term physical issues, struggle with personal relationships, have a hard time dealing with everyday life, become victimized, are more likely to become incarcerated and involved in accidents, vulnerable to substance abuse issues, and may even commit suicide. Adequate, appropriate treatment is essential to improving the quality of life of those who suffer from a mental illness.
