An Overview of Mental Health in Chino, California

Chino, California, borders the ritzy Chino Hills in San Bernardino County. Like most California towns, Chino sees year-round sunshine and nice temperatures that range from mid-60s to lower 70s in the winter months and mid-80s to 100s in the summer months. There is a lot to do in San Bernardino County, including shopping, hiking, biking, off-roading and so much more. Chino seems like a great place to live.

In addition to an overall nice environment, Chino also has numbers in its favor. For instance, the median household income in Chino is $72,832. While that number is lower than what it has been, it’s still significantly higher than the median household income in California or the United States. The median property value is $365,500, a nearly five percent growth from recent years.

Like most California towns and cities, Chino has a fairly diverse population. 52.2 percent of residents are Hispanic, 25.7 percent are white and 11.7 percent are Asian. 42 percent of the people who live in Chino speak a non-English language, and 88.4 percent are U.S. citizens. All in all, Chino seems like a nice place to live, but the demographic information only paints a portion of the picture.

San Bernardino: Ranked 8th Worst Place to Live in California

Despite all it has going for it, San Bernardino County was ranked as the eighth worst place to live in California. The study took into consideration several factors, including but not limited to education, jobs, crime, poverty rates, home value, incomes, population density, and work commutes.

Chino’s poverty rate is 12.2 percent and the county’s overall unemployment rate is 12.7 percent, which is three times higher than the state’s poverty rate. Though the median household income in Chino is significantly higher than the nation’s median, the income per capita in Chino is $23,116 a year. This suggests that there is a huge discrepancy in wealth between Chino residents.

Wealth discrepancy and poverty can result in feelings of inadequacy, depression, and suicide. It can also lead to high crime rates. San Bernardino’s homicide rate is 5.8 per 100,000 individuals. The violent crime rate is 409.1 per 100,000 individuals.

Health Concerns in Chino

As such a diverse city, Chino sees a variety of health problems. For instance, the obesity rate in Chino is 27.9 percent, which is higher than the highest obesity prevalence value of any California county in 2017. The number of HIV diagnoses in San Bernardino County is 208.4 per 100,000 individuals. The number of chlamydia diagnoses is significantly higher, at 514.9 per 100,000 individuals. These types of health concerns can lead to greater health problems, such as depression, social anxiety, fear, and other emotional disorders.

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) abuse is on the incline in San Bernardino County. In 2013/14, the admission rates for AOD-related complications rose by 10 percent. Admissions for methamphetamine addiction grew by 15 percent and the number of alcohol-involved incidences rose by 10 percent while the state as a whole saw a one percent decline.

There is a strong correlation between alcohol and drug abuse and mental illness. Moreover, alcohol and drug abuse can lead to poverty, which can cause a person to further spiral into depression and other drug-induced emotional issues.

Mental Health Resources in Chino

When compared against the nation’s mental illness rates, Chino ranks fairly high, with more than 11 percent of residents living with some sort of mental health condition. However, unlike many other counties throughout the nation, San Bernardino has several measures in place to help those afflicted receive the care they need to get better. It is a matter of finding that care that is the issue.
