Mental Illness Challenges in Deltona, Florida

According to the Florida Hospital, mental health problems concerned 36 percent of Volusia County residents. Overdose and suicide are often linked with mental illness. In Florida, there were 23.7 deaths due to drug overdose per 100,000 people in 2016. Volusia County also suffers from a high rate of excessive drinking, with 16.3 percent of adults reporting drinking to excess in 2017. Suicide rates in the county are higher than the national average, at 18.3 per 100,000 individuals in 2016. Each of these challenges can either be increased by mental illness, or be a factor that causes mental issues like depression or anxiety disorders.

Throughout the nation, it’s estimated that at least 25 percent of the population was homeless in 2014. There have been many links between homelessness and mental health issues, including the homeless population in Roanoke, of which 70 percent were receiving or had received mental health treatment. In Deltona, only 76.7 percent of the population owns a home. Combined with the median income of $43,441, which is less than the national median, residents can struggle to afford a home or place to live.
