Before talking about myself, I want to say this: By the time someone reaches out for help, they are usually not only stuck but in considerable distress. It isn't easy to acknowledge when we are struggling, and sometimes we think, “If only I was stronger / smarter / tougher / more something, I wouldn't be in this situation or need therapy.” This is not only an inappropriate thought, it's unfair. Nobody... Read More

Overview of Mental Health Resources in Orlando, Florida

Everyone knows Orlando to be the “Theme Park Capital of the World” as it is the home to Walt Disney World and the Universal Orlando Resort.  In 2016, it attracted more than 72 million visitors.  When the resort opened in 1971, it was single-handedly the reason for a huge expansion of population and increase in economic growth.  There are more theme parks in Orlando than all over the world and the vacation resort occupies four counties.  Tourism is the number one contributor to the city’s economy.  The Pew Research Center study ranked the city as the 4th most popular city of where people would like to live in America.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau report in 2017, Orlando has a population of 2,802,570.  Orlando has many lakes, swamps, and is mostly wetlands with flat terrain.  The foundation of the land is porous with limestone, which causes it to be vulnerable to sinkholes.  The climate is humid subtropical.  There is a hot, rainy season and a warm, dry season.

The unemployment rate is currently at four percent, but the city is coined as the home of “the working poor” as the median household income averages $53,000.00.  This causes the city to be the 3rd worst for family incomes out of the 25 top metropolitan cities in the U.S.  Almost half of city’s residents have challenges affording basic necessities such as healthcare, transportation, and even housing.

In 2015, the divorce rate in Florida was 8.4 percent compared to the country’s rate of 6.9 percent.  The rate of dissolutions in the same year was 4.0 percent for Florida and 3.1 for the U.S.

Mental Health Concerns

Approximately seventy percent of people who need mental health services are not receiving them due to lack of resources or challenges in finding them for themselves.  During the past five years, mental health illness calls to law enforcement has increased by over 30 percent.  The cause is likely due to the national trend to close down mental health inpatient facilities and not follow-up with the community programs as promised.  The rates of mental health prevalence and substance abuse for youths and for adults in Florida is in alignment with the rates for the U.S.

Florida is one of sixteen states that does not provide workplace protection for the LGBT+ community.  LGBT+ individuals report that they are afraid of being harassed and fear violence when they are out in the community.  The violent attack in the gay nightclub in Orlando in June of 2016 has caused many people to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  LGBT+ people are three times more likely to suffer from mental health symptoms and young LGBT+ people are four times more likely to commit suicide than heterosexual youths.

Aspire Health Partners is the largest behavioral health nonprofit provider in Florida.  They provide mental health and substance abuse services for adults.  Voluntary, involuntary, and crisis intervention are also offered.

Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health is one of the leading nonprofit mental health organizations that provide services for individuals and for families.  There is a child and adolescent psychiatric specialty hospital on location.

Solace Counseling offers mental health services for children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.  They have individual and group counseling to address a wide variation of symptoms and behaviors.  Solace offers a sliding scale payment fee when necessary.

How We Can Help

Listed below are nonprofit mental health organizations and other providers in the hope that you can find the support and services you need.  It is helpful to consider what is important to you in a provider prior to making the call.  Many will offer a free consultation over the phone to be sure that it is a good fit for you.  Consider listing your symptoms and the goals that you would like to achieve through therapy.
