Overview of Mental Health Resources in Port St. Lucie, Florida

Port St. Lucie, Florida is located in St. Lucie County. Port St. Lucie is relatively close to the Miami and Fort Lauderdale metro areas. Port St. Lucie is also the third largest city in South Florida.

Like so many areas of Florida, people tend to find a high quality of life in the city because of the warm, subtropical climate, the nearby beaches and the outdoor activities available in the area. Even the winters are very mild or even warm, and the cost of living in Florida including in Port St. Lucie is comparatively low.

Port St. Lucie is in what’s called the Treasure Coast of Florida, which is around an hour north of luxurious Palm Beach. There are rivers for paddling, outdoor preserves, and championship golf courses in the area.

However, not everything about life in Port St. Lucie is about beautiful outdoor scenery and warm south Florida weather.

Mental Health Information in Port St. Lucie, Florida

In recent years, the state of Florida including Port St. Lucie have seen a huge increase in the number of opioid users and opioid-related overdoses and deaths. Law enforcement in Port St. Lucie has been working to combat the influx of drugs like heroin, and according to a study from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, heroin deaths in South Florida went up 89 percent from 2012 to 2015.

In addition to deaths, there are also frequent arrests and raids by police in the area. As is the case with so many other cities and towns in the United States, a lot of the blame for the heroin epidemic in Port St. Lucie is blamed on the abuse of prescription medications that started in the mid-2000s.

The median annual income for households in Port St. Lucie was reported at $50,829 in 2016, which is less than the median annual income for the entire U.S. More than 14 percent of the population in Port St. Lucie was reported to be living in poverty in 2016, and among that percentage, the largest demographic was females aged 24 to 34.

There was a study from the state of Florida conducted that looked at the community needs of Port St. Lucie. It found that many people in St. Lucie County are affected by family life issues including low incomes, high unemployment and poverty, and other similar issues.

According to research from the Florida Behavioral Health Association, in 62 of the 67 counties in Florida, the suicide death rates are higher than homicides. 93 percent of the entire state experienced more suicides than homicides in 2016 according to this data.

Also, the same research found that the divorce rate in St. Lucie County is lower than the rate for the state of Florida but that there has been a significant increase in the number of households headed by females, which can lead to less favorable outcomes according to the study.

In the state of Florida as a whole, almost two-thirds of the people living there with mental illnesses don’t receive treatment.
