I believe that doesn’t change as we go throughout our lives, but many of us experience situations and relationships that shake us to our core. Often, we come out asking who we are, where we are going, and why we exist.... Read More

An Overview of Mental Health in Wyoming, Michigan

Wyoming, Michigan, sits in the southern part of the state and is home to almost 76,000 residents. Most of the households in Wyoming are families with children under the age of 18 years (66.3 percent). The majority (74.8 percent) are White; the second largest group is Hispanic at 22.1 percent. The city is unusual in that it splits two counties, Kent and Ottawa. However, it was part of the Community Health Assessment performed by Kent County in 2017.

The median household income of Wyoming, Michigan, is $50,971. This is significantly lower than the mean household income for Kent County as a whole ($70,755) and the state average of $66,670. Approximately 15 percent of households in Wyoming live at or below the federal poverty line. That figure rises to 19.1 percent for children ages zero to 17 years.

In 2017, the Kent County Health Department published a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA). Mental health rose to the top of the list of priority health issues, followed by substance abuse, obesity, and poor nutrition. With 13.4 percent of respondents reporting 14 or more days of poor mental health within the last 30 days, the question becomes whether the issue is availability or accessibility of mental health services.

Availability of Mental Health Services in Wyoming, Michigan

In terms of available services, Kent County appears to do pretty well. The ratio of individuals in the population to mental health providers is 384:1, which is better than the state average of 460:1. Seventeen mental health facilities are available, and these organizations serve children and teens as well as adults. Therefore, the difficulty in obtaining mental health services in Wyoming, Michigan, appears to lie with accessing the services that are present.

Accessibility of Mental Health Services in Wyoming, Michigan

While most people responding to the survey described their own mental health as excellent (22.9 percent) or good (43 percent), they cited several barriers that kept Kent County residents from accessing help when it is needed. The respondents to the survey listed these as some of the barriers to accessing mental health services.

  • The barrier cited most often was cost (44.7 percent). Even those covered by health insurance (90.6 percent of the county) reported a lack of coverage or copays or deductibles that they could not pay out of pocket.
  • Embarrassment, shame, or stigma associated with mental health were barriers for 34.4 percent of respondents.
  • Just over a quarter of respondents (27.3 percent) stated they simply did not know who to call for help with mental health concerns.
  • Distrust of the healthcare system was cited as a barrier by 27.2 percent of the population.
  • Cultural beliefs about health in general were cited by 19.6 percent of the respondents.

Mental Health Needs of Children in Wyoming, Michigan

One especially alarming fact that emerged from the CHNA was that 23.6 percent of middle school students and 32.2 percent of high school students reported feeling sad or hopeless for two or more consecutive weeks in the last 12 months. The students also reported significant levels of suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts. Bullying was often cited as a contributing factor with 32.8 percent of middle school students and 22.8 percent of high school students reporting that they were victims of bullying on school grounds in the past 12 months.

One method of assessing the mental health needs of the residents in terms of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) score. An ACE is any traumatic experience that happens to a person before the age of 18 years. Examples are child abuse or neglect, violence in the home, divorce, or incarceration of a parent, just to name a few. For Kent County residents, 47 percent of survey respondents reported at least one ACE. This number is likely too low, as many people are uncomfortable disclosing the existence of such experiences.
