An Overview of Mental Health in Salem

Not just in Salem, but in the state of Oregon there is a significant situation related to the number of people suffering from mental illness and it going untreated in many cases. Some statistics show that one in eight children and one in 18 adults in Oregon have a mental illness.

The same research from the Oregon Health Authority showed that in Oregon, less than half the adults with mental illnesses were receiving treatment from the state. Only around one-third of young people with mental illnesses were being served by state treatment resources at the time of the research.

Suicide is also the leading cause of death among veterans in Oregon who are aged 45 and younger, and the suicide rate in certain areas of Oregon including Portland are three times higher than the national average.

Along with issues of untreated mental health, Salem and Oregon have issues with drugs and substance abuse as well. For example, it was recently reported that deaths related to methamphetamine in Oregon are higher than they’ve ever been in the state.

In Oregon in 2016, meth played a role in more deaths than heroin and was in-line with the number of deaths related to prescription opioids. Oregon also has the second-highest rate of prescription drug abuse in the country.

In Oregon poverty remains a pervasive issue also. For example, it was recently reported that nearly half of the children in Oregon are raised in households characterized as low income. In 23 of the 36 counties in Oregon, fewer than half of children born into low-income families will make it to the point of being middle class when they’re adults based on a report from the Oregon Community Foundation.

Marion County has seen rising housing costs, which has played a significant role in poverty. Marion County has one of the highest housing cost levels in Oregon, and 39 percent of families spend more than a third of their income on housing.
