Located in Adams County, Commerce City, Colorado is a municipality with a population of 58,449 as of 2018. The city is quickly growing and has experienced a 27.3 percent increase since the last population count of about 45,900 people in 2010. The city features a diverse racial makeup. White residents make up 82.7 percent of the population, 43.6 percent of which are not Hispanic or Latino. 47.4 percent of the population identifies as Hispanic, 4.3 percent are African American, and 1.7 percent are Asian. 14.2 percent of residents are foreign-born and 32.9 percent speak a language other than English at home.

While the average per capita income for residents in Commerce City is lower than average at $25,109, the median household income is high at $71,621. 71.4 percent of people own their homes, and the median value of owner-occupied housing units is $289,600. The poverty rate of the city is 11.5 percent, which is close to the national average. However, the poverty rate is higher for Hispanics and sits at 18.05 percent. Commerce City’s large oil refinery is central to the city’s economy.

For residents of Commerce City, there is an activity for everyone all four seasons of the year. Sports fans are sure to get a kick out of Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which is home to the MLS Colorado Rapids soccer team. Mental Health Concerns in Commerce City, Colorado

While Colorado is home to some of the most beautiful natural landmarks in the country and has much to offer its residents when it comes to entertainment and recreation, there is a very high prevalence of mental illness in the state. In fact, it ranks 44th in the country. Approximately 20 percent of people in Colorado have a mental illness of some sort and 9.07 percent struggle with a substance abuse disorder. There are several concerns unique to Commerce City:

  • Commerce City has a crime rate of 3,820 per 100,000 people, which is higher than both state and national rates.
  • In Adams County, 66 percent of high school students reported having at least one bad mental health day in the last month, 19 percent seriously considered suicide, 15 percent made a plan to commit suicide, and 8 percent attempted suicide.
  • From 2006 and 2016, the suicide death rate in Adams County dropped from around 19 percent to 16 percent. However, this number is still over the national average. The rate was highest for white residents, males, and people between the ages of 15 and 24. 51 percent of suicide deaths involved a firearm.
  • Adams County experienced a sharp rise in binge drinking from 15 percent to 18 percent of adults reporting binge drinking. The rate of opioid overdose deaths was just under 8 per 100,000 population and around 4.5 per 100,000 population for both methamphetamine and heroin overdose deaths. Marijuana is legal in Colorado, and 11.6 percent of people in Adams County currently use the drug.
  • Approximately 26,300 people in Adams County who need mental healthcare in 2017 over the age of five didn’t receive treatment. People list being uninsured, cost of treatment, and feeling uncomfortable talking with a health professional as the main reasons they did not receive care.
