An Overview of Mental Health in Burien, Washington

As of July 2018, a total of 51,908 residents call Burien, Washington their home. The city is located in King County and has experienced significant growth since 2010. It features the newly completed Town Square area, which includes a senior living area, a library, apartments, condos, retail buildings, and Town Square Park. The city is less than a ten-minute drive from the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and the city offers easy access to large neighboring cities such as Seattle, Bellevue, and Tacoma. Burien has several hospitals, schools, and art and cultural centers. However, many people have a long commute with 28.9 minutes being the mean travel time to work.

There are more men than women living in Burien, and the median age of residents is 38 years old. Approximately 2,709 veterans live in the city. Burien values the ethnic diversity of its residents, with 57% white residents, 24.6 Hispanic residents, 12.8% Asian residents, and 8% African American residents. 24.7% of people were born outside the United States and 36.2% speak a language other than English at home.

The poverty rate of the city is 13.6% and the median household income is $62,315. While 9.6% of the population is living with a disability, 13% of people do not have health insurance. Additionally, the high school graduation rate is 81.5%.

Mental Health Statistics in Burien, Washington

Millions of Americans struggle with their mental health, including individuals who live in Burien. While many more people are beginning to recognize that one’s mental health is just as important as one’s physical health, there are still many people struggling to get the care they need. The consequences of not receiving treatment are problematic. From suicide and substance abuse to homelessness to incarceration, untreated mental illness has a severe effect on individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. The people of Burien are not immune to these consequences and face unique struggles. The following statistics can help enlighten people on what the mental health situation is like in the area:

  • In King County, 4% of adults report severe psychological distress and 30% of youths report depressive feelings. Homosexual and bisexual adults in the community were twice more likely than heterosexual individuals to experience psychological distress.
  • 24% of school-age youths in King County report having used alcohol, marijuana, painkillers, or any other illicit drugs. Drug use was most prevalent among surveyed Hispanic students.
  • The number of overdose deaths in King County increased from 244 in 2010 to 332 in 2016. The number of overdose deaths has increased for prescription opioids, heroin, and methamphetamine.
  • Between the years 2011 and 2015, the suicide rate for King County was 12.2 deaths per 100,000 people. This rate was highest for American Indians and Alaska Natives, which was followed closely by white residents. The rate of suicide hospitalizations was much higher for those living in high poverty.
  • Mental health was a leading cause of hospitalizations for both adults and children of both genders. There were a total of 10,699 adult hospitalizations due to mental illness from 2011 to 2015.
  • 9 of the residents in Burien are currently divorced. 13.1% of women are divorced compared to 10.8% of men. American Indians have the highest rate of divorce at 24.9%.
  • King County has a severe homeless issue. The most recent count found 11,199 homeless individuals in the area. Approximately 1,432 of the homeless population has substance abuse disorder, and 47% of adults are unsheltered. While there has been a decrease in homelessness among white and Hispanic populations, all other ethnic groups saw an increase. Women now make up 40% of the population as opposed to 33% in the previous year.
