An Overview of Mental Health in Troy, Michigan

The city of Troy, Michigan, is a suburb of Detroit, Oakland County, and lies about 20 minutes away from the downtown area. Over 83 thousand people lived in the city as of 2016, and that same report noted that the male-to-female percentages are nearly even, with the female population being less than 1% higher than the male. However, despite this city’s recent growth and reputation as being one of the best cities in the area in which to raise a family, some residents are experiencing poor mental health and suffering from issues such as depression, addiction, bipolar disorder, and suicidal tendencies. Many factors can influence or worsen these issues, no matter an individual’s age or gender.

Troy’s Economy about Mental Health

The city of Troy has a varied occupational landscape that includes technology, manufacturing, and healthcare. These industries employ over 40,000 individuals in the city, according to Data USA, and that same site noted a high median household income of $88,954, which is much greater than the national average of $55,000. Despite this prosperity, however, these numbers may be connected to certain mental health disorders that include:

  • Working long hours: The pressure to succeed at their jobs may be causing stress for some individuals and contributing to problems like anxiety and depression;
  • Maintaining or keeping benefits: Some residents of Troy may be unhappy in their field but stay so they do not lose their family’s health benefits;
  • Wage Gaps: The wage gap in Michigan is much higher than in other states, which may cause stress and depression for Troy’s female residents;
  • Home Ownership: Many residents in Troy own a home and likely have mortgage payments and other debt that can lead to stress and a desire to escape into addictive behaviors.

In addition, despite Troy’s low unemployment rate of 2.80, which is one of the lowest in the state, those who cannot find work likely lack the health care assistance they need for their mental health issues.

Poverty and Mental Health Problems in Troy

Those in Troy who live below the city’s poverty line are generally more at risk for suicide and other destructive behavior for several reasons. First, mental illness is usually more common among the poor, as the stress of trying to survive can cause problems like depression and anxiety to develop. In addition, the children of families who live in poverty and who suffer from a hereditary mental issue are not likely to receive the treatment they need until much later, if at all.

10% of Oakland County residents did not have health insurance in 2012, according to a Beaumont Health System report, and those who lacked it cited cost as one of the main reasons. Seniors who live below the poverty line in Troy are one of the most vulnerable groups, as their combined age, possible disabilities, and lack of transportation make it difficult for them to access treatment. This is a troubling trend, as the suicide rate for the elderly in America is already higher than those of other age groups.

Finding Mental Health Treatment in Troy

Despite socioeconomic obstacles, there are some mental health resources available for the residents of Troy. From outpatient clinics to counseling offices and hospitals, there are several places those needing assistance can go to, including:

  • Henry Ford Behavioral Health: This is part of the Henry Ford Medical Center outpatient service that treats a variety of mental illnesses for children, teens, and adults;
  • Birmingham Maple Clinic: This is a private mental health clinic that treats individuals and families alike with therapy sessions and other solutions offered by professionals experienced in both social work and psychology;
  • Mindful Wellness Center: A clinic that treats a variety of mental illnesses including OCD and mood disorders, anxiety, depression, and mental health issues related to grief and addiction.

It is important to remember that each of these facilities has its own payment and treatment policies. It is best to reach out by phone before visiting to understand your preferred location’s guidelines.
