Mental Health Resources in New Rochelle, New York

Unlike most of New York which is comprised of widespread urban environments, New Rochelle, New York is a mostly residential area distinguished by its large suburban areas, family friendly parks, golf courses, and recreational activities. It is located within Westchester County and borders the Atlantic Ocean.  The city also contains a large businesses district located downtown full of many office spaces, urban housing, restaurants, shopping, and more.

As a whole, New Rochelle’s median household income of $77.320 exceeds New York’s by about $5,000. The city’s poverty rates are also significantly lower at 11.2% compared to the state’s 14.1%. Although these statistics may make it seem that the city is immune to many of the issues New York as a whole experiences, this is not the case. Rather, there are many residents within the city struggling with issues like poverty, expensive housing, income disparity, and other several issues. These problems are especially prevalent with the minority groups living within New Rochelle and result in increased mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse disorders.

Mental Health Challenges in New Rochelle

As is often true of most cities, New Rochelle’s minorities struggle the most to make ends meet. New Rochelle has the second highest Gini Index in the state and places right after the capital New York, New York with a score of 0.53. This number indicates that New Rochelle has great income disparity. In fact, Westchester as a whole was reported to have the largest income disparity within New York, and the state has the largest wage gap in the entire the United States.

While only 6.58% of white residents living in New Rochelle are living below the poverty line, 17.82% of Hispanics, 14.17% of African Americans, and 22.27 of other minorities are living in poverty. Similarly, 91.75% of white students graduate from high school while only 64.96% of Hispanics receive their high school degree.

Statistically, poverty has an extreme effect on one’s mental health. While those in the highest income bracket in the United States report mental illness rates of 1.2%, a significantly higher 8.7% of people below the poverty line report mental health issues. This is also true of youths with 21% of children living in poverty suffering from a mental health disorder. This can greatly affect their overall mental health as an adult, lead to substance abuse issues, and prevent them from obtaining a high school degree.

Divorce Rates in New Rochelle

New Rochelle has an impressively low divorce rate of 8.1%. This is very close to the state divorce rate of 8.7%, one of the lowest in the country. Almost half of the residents living in New Rochelle are married with an overall marriage rate of 46.5%. The highest rates of divorce are found amongst individuals who identify as two or more races at 10.2%, and the lowest rate is a perfect zero percent amongst Indians. Mental illness has a profound effect on an individual’s likelihood to either never get married or to get a divorce. This is especially true of major depression, alcohol abuse, and specific phobia disorders. Finding a good marriage counselor can help couples who suffer from mental illnesses learn to navigate their issues. Counseling may also benefit individuals deal with the aftermath of a divorce and recover before starting a new relationship.

The Trouble Finding a Suitable Therapist in New Rochelle

One of the most consistent issues nationwide for those with mental illnesses is not being able to find the treatment they need. About half of adults and children who have a mental disorder do not receive care in a given year. Additionally, although African Americans and Hispanics often make up a large percentage of the population living poverty, they seek help only half as much as White Americans do. There are many consequences to not finding the necessary treatment such as:

  • Suicide
  • Homelessness
  • Unproductiveness at work
  • A lack of education
  • Hospitalization
  • Incarceration
