When it comes to choosing with a therapist, there’s something to be said for working with someone that can personally relate to your background, lifestyle and culture. In addition, if English is not your native language, while you may be able to manage perfectly fine with an English-speaking therapist, it’s still less than ideal. Unfortunately, the majority of online therapy platforms are based in the US and UK as are their therapists.

Enter Tokitus, a European therapy provider that can cater to clients all over Europe. They offer therapy in 14 languages, enabling their users to engage in sessions in their native tongues.

What is Tokitus?

Founded in 2020, Tokitus is a newcomer to the digital healthcare space. Based out of Lithuania, this online therapy platform offers multilingual counseling through video and audio sessions, and primarily serves clients in Europe. It was co-founded by Ulvia Avidan, a licensed gestalt therapist and a Ph.D. candidate in psychotherapeutic sciences at the University of Sigmund Freud in Vienna.

Among their mission statements, Tokitus strives to make mental well-being accessible to all, through affordable and accessible 24/7 support. This vision drives their focus on quality, commitment to full transparency and user safety.

Overview: How Does Tokitus Work?

Tokitus operates as a pay-as-you-go service providing users with access to video or audio therapy sessions and messaging from certified counselors and therapists. The platform offers session booking, video calls and messaging through their website.

Plans and Pricing

Users are charged a per-session fee of 50 Euros (around $60). Each session lasts 45-50 minutes, and the first session fee is charged to the credit or debit card upon booking. After the initial session, any subsequent sessions are automatically charged to the registered card 12 hours before the next scheduled session.

The monthly cost to depends entirely on the number of sessions you book. Like in-person therapy, Tokitus therapists will recommend what they believe to be the ideal treatment schedule for each client based on their specific concerns and goals.

Tokitus Ease of Use: Mobile and Desktop

Tokitus has a very user-friendly and easy to navigate website that can be used on mobile or desktop. Currently, there is no app associated with the therapy service.

Sign-Up Process

You can sign up for Tokitus on your computer or mobile device through their website. You’ll be asked to create an account by providing a nickname, password, and email address. You must be at least 18 years old to sign up.

The website allows you to browse through their therapists to select the one you prefer, or you can choose to allow the site to provide you with a match. You then complete an intake interview to provide basic details about your needs and goals. The interview asks a series of questions like your presenting issues, topics you would like to discuss, gender, and which language you would prefer for therapy treatment. Tokitus currently offers therapy in 14 different languages, including:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • German
  • Russian
  • Lithuanian
  • Estonian
  • Belarussian
  • Ukrainian
  • Farsi
  • French
  • Albanian
  • Chinese
  • Hebrew

Once you’ve completed the interview, you’ll be asked to select a date and time for your first therapy session. You will then be given a personal summary based on your answers that provides an overview of what to expect from your therapy experience.

You will then be led to a “meet your therapist” page that provides a detailed bio of your matched (or selected) therapist. You can review their photo, credentials, experience, and specializations. Once you approve of the chosen therapist, you can click through to a secure payment gateway where your card is processed for the first session.

Tokitus - Meet Your Therapist

Once you’ve booked a session with your therapist, you’ll have the option to send them messages by logging into your account and selecting the “chat” button. The chat window is simple to use and allows you to leave messages at any time.

If you are not pleased with your session, it is simple to change therapists through your account page by selecting “change therapists.” Your profile page also contains your history of sessions, a countdown to upcoming sessions, and an option to email the company to suggest new account features based on your needs. The platform is still in the early stages, which means user feedback is important.

Tokitus Sessions

Your session takes place on a video chat system on the Tokitus website. You’ll need a desktop or mobile device to join. You can choose to use only audio or do a video chat. Before your session, you will get an email reminder 24 hours before the appointment and then again 1 hour before it is set to begin. The video chat system is very user-friendly and easy to use. On your account page, you will see a countdown window for your start time. Once your session is set to begin, you simply select a button to join in.

Tokitus Counselor Qualifications

The number of therapists offered by Tokitus much smaller when compared with the more established online therapy platforms. However, Tokitus offers a great deal of diversity in languages and cultural background, reflecting the needs of their primary customer base in Europe. Their team consists of professional psychologists, counselors, and therapists from all over the world.

To qualify as a provider on Tokitus, counselors must have proof of an academic degree in psychotherapy science or psychology, four years of clinical experience with adults, and additional methodological training in therapeutic modalities.

When hired, therapists undergo an onboarding process where they are required to fill out questionnaires describing their experience and provide supporting documents demonstrating their credentials. Therapists then complete an interview with the co-founder of the platform before being hired. Once hired, they are given training on using the platform as well as a crisis intervention protocol. Tokitus also offers their therapists weekly supervision with a Therapist Success Manager.

Therapists currently listed on Tokitus have advanced degrees in mental health and impressive credentials as mental health care professionals. The high-quality team at Tokitus gives it the feel of a diverse private practice rather than an online therapy platform.

What Is Tokitus Therapy Like?

I was matched with a therapist based out of Vienna named Anastasia Oflidi. She had advanced training in psychotherapy and over six years of experience. Her primary approach to therapy was systemic family therapy, with additional training in mindfulness meditation. English was her second language, but she was completely fluent.

Unlike many other online platforms, my first session felt very much like in-person therapy. She gave a brief introduction of her background, summarized the concerns I had listed at intake, and invited me to share my current problems. She was very careful to assure me that I did not have to share any personal details or identifying information if I did not feel comfortable doing so. Her demeanor was extremely warm and professional.

During my session, I felt very comfortable opening up and found that my therapist was able to give me some profound insights about some of my problems. She was able to identify some patterns in my behavior and helped me understand how they were connected to my past and present problems. By the halfway point of the session, it felt like I had known her for years.

As the session came to its endpoint, she gave me a heads up that we were nearing the 50-minute mark and then focused on goals for the week. She also provided me with some exercises to practice and told me to chat with her through the website whenever I wanted to reach out. She encouraged me to try one session per week but was perfectly open to whatever schedule worked for me.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised at how effective the session was for me. I was left feeling like I had been given a warm hug and the beginnings of a support system. It was equivalent to an excellent in-person session except much more affordable and done from the comfort of my own home. The option to be able to connect directly to your therapist through chat is also a great function that places Tokitus above many in-person therapy experiences.

Bottom Line

As more online therapy providers enter the market, it can be difficult to select the right platform from among all the available services. Fortunately, there are now many excellent options to choose from. Tokitus is a new company with a team that feels professional and hand-selected for their high qualifications. The platform itself is easy to use, efficient and feels both safe and private.

The most surprising aspect of Tokitus is how similar it felt to an in-person session. They have the feel of a high-quality private practice with the added benefits of convenience, affordability, and 24/7 support. Additionally, there is a great deal of flexibility for booking sessions, and they make it easy to try different therapists if you are not satisfied.

Overall, Tokitus is an excellent option for anyone in Europe that’s looking for support and insight from a qualified mental health professional at an exceptional value.
