Overview of Mental Health Resources in Columbus, Georgia

Columbus, GA is a city of nearly 200,000 people, located near the western edge of Georgia on the Chattahoochee River and Alabama-Georgia state line. It is the third-largest city was created specifically as a trading town by the Georgia Assembly of George in 1827. What started as mere group of tents, has now grown into a population that is 46 percent Black, 40 percent White, eight percent Latino and the remaining demographic groups of Asian American, American Indian, or of mixed descent.  Known as the home to the military base Fort Benning, the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, it is one of the major employers for the city along with TSYS, Muscogee County School District and Aflac.  Additionally, Columbus has the longest urban whitewater rafting course in the world on the Chattahoochee River.

Columbus does face problems concerning suicide and poverty. Mental health issues are increasingly becoming a point of contention for the area as Columbus is ranked 7th in the state for suicide. It is the 11th leading cause of death in the state of Georgia and on average; one person dies by suicide every 11 hours in the state. That number is double of those who die by homicide within Georgia.

The poverty rate for the area is 20.9% according to reports which is higher than the 14% national average with African-Americans making up the majority of that population of over 26,000 people. Within the poverty population, the largest demographic is Females 25-24 years old, followed next by Females 18-24 years old and lastly Males 6-11 years old. A recent study indicated that Georgia and other outlining southern areas have the least economic mobility in the United States. Experts contribute this lack of success is due to residential segregation, income inequality, local school quality, family structure, and social capital. For someone born into poverty, they have an estimated 69% change to remain at the lowest income levels for their entire life.
