Bio

Katelyn is a Resident in Counseling who received her Bachelor’s from Virginia Tech (Go Hokies!) and her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lynchburg College. She has been working in the mental health field for over 4 years in a variety of settings such as Intensive In-Home (IIH), Mental Health Skill Building, Therapeutic Day Treatment (TDT), and Therapeutic Mentoring. Katelyn enjoys working alongside people of all ages and backgrounds, though her passion is devoted to working with children, adolescents, and families.

Katelyn believes that one of the most effective ways to work and communicate with children is by using the tool that they are already experts in – play! Using the structured, theoretical basis of play therapy, Katelyn assists children in working through their difficulties, and to learn more adaptive, beneficial ways of coping. She is currently working toward earning the credential of Registered Play Therapist (RPT) and continues to receive additional supervision and clinical training to that end.

Katelyn believes that no matter what a person has experienced, most people can benefit from counseling. She is a strong proponent for early intervention and prevention while also being aware that some issues arise outside of our realm of control. Some of the presenting issues that Katelyn has supported others with are depression, anxiety, stress, issues related to attention/hyperactivity, grief and loss, trauma, interpersonal conflict, attachment-related difficulties, and oppositional-defiant behaviors, among other things.

In her leisure time, Katelyn enjoys reading, drinking coffee, exploring new places, being with friends, and playing with her cat, Winston. Katelyn also loves spending time with her family, especially with her 7 nieces and nephews.
