These days, alcoholism and other addictions, behavioral disorders, recovery and successful treatment, are all major concerns. This is not just because these problems are growing at an alarming rate, it is also because of the lack of facilities and help on offer, not to mention the terrible stigma that sufferers face.
Educating the Public at Large
The Reel Recovery Film Festival, which runs for a whole week, highlights film makers who produce sincere films relating to alcoholism and other addictions, behavioral disorders, recovery and treatment. It has lined up a vast array of diverse classic and contemporary shorts, documentaries and movies from the US and around the world. They are produced by industry veterans through to first-timer film-makers. Their different perspectives make incredibly interesting viewing.
12 South Recovery
This a renowned Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment Center based in Southern California. Its spokesperson notes that it: “is proud to act as an official sponsor of this multi-day celebration of film, the arts, writing and creativity” .
The Reel Recovery Film Festival
This incredible film festival initiative is produced by an organization called “Writers in Treatment.” It was co-founded by two great men, Robert Downey, Sr and Leonard Buschel. Reel Recovery’s main aim is to organize cultural events which take away some of the stigma connected to addiction and mental health issues.
The CEO and Founder of 12 South Recovery, Joshua Stickel, noted that: “At 12 South we believe in giving back to the community and bringing attention to causes that help suffering addicts recover. The Reel Recovery Film Festival provides a great forum for film makers to bring awareness to the critical issues of addiction and recovery in contemporary society”.
12 South Recovery’s Orange County Alcohol Treatment and Drug Rehab Programs provide step down care levels. These start with the PHP (Partial Hospitalization Program). Once this is completed, there is an IOP (Intensive Outpatient Program), and this is followed by OP (Outpatient Programming). Each level is personalized according to every patients’ specific needs. It also involves a gentle acclimatization back into society, although during this period, the goal of successful recovery is still very strong.
Buschel remarked that: “In the past few decades, there have been hundreds of Hollywood, European and independent films exploring addiction and recovery, from comedies to thrillers, dramas to documentaries. Ever since the Lost Weekend won an Academy Award in 1945, the public has been fascinated by addiction. We give voice and venue to film makers whose works might not be able to compete in festivals like Sundance, Telluride, or Tribeca”. What could be better?
