“U.S. suicide rates have risen in recent years, while rates in other nations have fallen”
According to the American Psychological Association: “The suicide rate increased 33% from 1999 through 2017, from 10.5 to 14 suicides per 100,000 people (NCHS). Rates have increased more sharply since 2006. Suicide ranks as the fourth leading cause of death for people ages 35 to 54, and the second for 10- to 34-year-olds. It remains the 10th leading cause of death overall” .
What is Behind Someone Taking Their Own Life?
“Persistent thoughts of suicide plague people who suffer from chronic depression and anxiety”
There are multiple reasons as to why people take their own lives, and the reasons behind the rise and decrease of suicide rates are also intricate. Risk factors incorporate health status, for example: serious mental health issues, physical health conditions, substance abuse and depression; historical factors such as: trauma or abuse when young, a history of suicide within the family, and previous attempted suicide.
