“Over 12 million Americans will suffer from binge eating disorder in their lifetime”
Binge eating is currently regarded as the most common eating disorder in America. To that end, the Eating Recovery Center (ERC), which is based in California, and regarded as a leading quality care provider for eating disorders and their accompanying conditions, is extending its program to Sacramento, where it will incorporate treatment for adult’s: compulsive overeating, binge eating, night eating, emotional eating, and associated disorders .
What is a Concise Definition of Binge Eating?
Binge eating disorder symptoms involve: being out of control with what we eat, consuming large quantities of food, having binging periods at least once per week for a minimum of three months; emotional eating and the associated feelings of guilt, shame and distress.
What is the Binge Eating Treatment and Recovery Program?
In a nutshell, this is an all-inclusive, advanced treatment plan which is dedicated to helping those with eating disorders and related behavior issues. With regard to the latter, this includes contributing and co-morbid difficulties, including trauma, anxiety and mood symptoms, all of which can be responsible for the maintenance and contribution of patients’ eating disorders.
National Senior Director at ERC, Julie Friedman, PhD, notes that: “Binge eating disorder, like other eating disorders, tends to be neurobiologically based with many emotional, social and behavioral components to it”.
A Misunderstood Affliction
Binge eating is generally misunderstood, and is frequently seen as an under-diagnosed mental disorder. The Chief Medical Officer of ERC, Anne Marie O’Melia, MS, MD, FAAP, stated that: “Because of a lack of understanding, many people who suffer from binge eating or compulsive eating behaviors, are unaware that they even have an eating disorder, which means that they don’t know how or when to access the necessary treatment”.
Yet, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. – This category of conditions are easily treatable, and now through the Eating Recovery Center’s expansion, awareness in the state of California is not just being boosted, the Sacramento site also offers a specialized program that will help patients find long-lasting recovery. With so much low nutritional junk and processed food on the market – something which does not always satisfy us, and just sends us to the kitchen to get more; professional guidance and a workable protocol are essential.
Friedman, remarked that: “At ERC, we treat not only the eating behaviors but also the depression, anxiety and trauma that can contribute to eating disordered behaviors, and we do it all under one roof”. This is excellent news for patients, as when they have to visit different clinics for different associated issues, it takes away the seamless experience. Also, it is far more beneficial when there is a holistic approach such as at the Eating Recovery Center.
