As parents, we all believe our children are special. We revel in the special gifts that make them unique. The older they get, the more you can start to see who they are as a person. Perhaps your child was born with raw athletic talent, stark artistic ability or even extreme intelligence?

If it seems like your little one is on the top end of the intelligence curve, how do you know if your child is actually a genius?

Let’s take a look at 4 signs that might mean your child is well above average:

Does things at an unusually early age

One telltale sign that your child might be a genius is their ability to do things at a very early age. Early reading is considered a leading sign of extreme intelligence. When talking about cases of highly intelligent children, it might seem as if the essentially learned to read on their own or with little teaching.

You might have noticed that your child passed intellectual milestones particularly early. Early milestones like recognizing facial expressions as a baby or imitating gestures can be a clue. Children who seem to pick up these skills early and easily may be considered a genius.

Enjoys social interactions more than other kids

Another sign of a child genius is their uncanny ability to interact socially. They tend to be children who talk a lot. Interestingly, they often prefer social interactions with adults, as opposed to children their own age.

They may also have a highly developed sense of humor for someone their age. Overall, they will display signs of being much more socially invested than most kids their own age.

Learns new things very easily

Childhood geniuses tend to learn new things both early and easily. The likely learned to read and write from a very early age. It’s possible they have adopted interesting and sometimes unusual hobbies on their own.

In order to obtain the knowledge they crave to continue learning, these children tend to ask a lot of questions. It’s true that all children tend to ask plenty of questions, childhood geniuses ask questions that are in pursuit of knowledge.

A Keen Memory

One final sign that your child might be a genius is if they have an excellent memory. Do they remember details, dates or things it seems like they shouldn’t? Do you find yourself thinking, ‘how did they remember that’?

This might be a sign of a high level of intelligence. This might be even more indicative if your child had an Eidetic memory (or photographic memory).

Final Thoughts

These are just a few of the signs that your child might just be a genius. Often parents just have a sense that their child is special. If you see some or all of these signs it’s very possible that you are raising a child genius.

While it is exciting to think that you might have created a childhood masterpiece, it can also be stressful for parents. Making sure your child prodigy is stimulated and on the right path can be difficult.

There are tests and measures that experts can use to test your child’s level of intelligence. Fortunately, there are many resources available to parents raising significantly gifted children. If you think your child might be one of them, find a professional who can help guide you along the way.
